The vast majority of these experiments were conducted by Dr. Sigmund Rascher to save the lives of the German Air Force pilots. I find that ironic because the Nazis killed innocent people in order to save lives. These experiments were organized at the Dachau concentration camp in the southern part of Germany. This concentration camp is extremely significant because it became the model for all other camps that were built after it. It became known as a "school of violence," for the many SS officers who were in control. The Dachau concentration camp was used for twelve years until it was liberated by American troops on April 29th, 1945. During these experiments, doctors would force the victim into a low pressure chamber which was airtight. The pressure could be adjusted to up to sixty-eight thousand feet to mimic the descent of a flier. These experiments proved to be very dangerous because cut off the oxygen supply of the individual being tested. Around 80 people tested died due to the changes in pressure and the rest of them were executed. Rascher even dissected the brains of his patients while they were still conscious. It was determined that death occurred from the formation of air bubbles in the brain. After many were liberated from their camps at the end of the Holocaust, Rascher's experiments were considered inhumane and cruel during the Nuremburg Trials. You can probably tell by his photo that he was a pretty weird and creepy individual. He and his wife were accused of kidnapping a child during her fourth pregnancy. He was also accused of murdering one of his medical assistants.
